LU Choral Arts: Handel • Israel in Egypt Fri., Sat., Apr. 24, 25 • 8 pm
Baker Hall • $18
The 200
singers of Lehigh University’s Choral Arts, directed by Steven Sametz, present
a concert exploring the story of the Exodus through Handel’s most ambitious and
brilliant oratorio for double choir and orchestra,
Israel in Egypt. Notes Sametz,
“Handel knocked himself out with
Israel
in Egypt. It is a tour de force for the choir; the
arias are full of drama and color, depicting the plagues visited on Egypt and the parting of the Red
Sea. This is the height of the High Baroque period.” The concert also features a
45-piece orchestra and the internationally
acclaimed soloists, sopranos
Carol
Chickering and Michele Zuckman, counter-tenor
Roger Isaacs, tenor
Eric
Fennell, and bass-baritones
Elem
Eley and
William Walker.
