Betty Anne Waters – Commuting a Life Sentence Through DNA

Speaker Betty Anne Waters, whose brother was sentenced to life in prison for a murder that she believed he did not commit. She was a high school dropout who went to college and then law school to work on his defense. With the help of the Innocence Project, she was able to get him released from prison and exonerated through DNA. She will speak about her experience.

Elizabeth Gilbert is known for her best-selling 2006 memoir Eat, Pray, Love, which chronicled her journey alone around the world, looking for solace after a difficult divorce. The book, translated into over 30 languages, with over seven million copies sold worldwide, is the basis for a movie starring Julia Roberts. The book became so popular that, in 2008, Time Magazine named Gilbert one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Gilbert’s fifth book, Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace With Marriage, published in January 2010, made the New York Times Best Sellers List. It tells of the author’s efforts to overcome her ambivalence about matrimony.

The author of six poetry books, including the prize-winning The Pilot Star Elegies, appears regularly in The New Yorker, The Paris Review and The New York Times Book Review.

In 2005, Santos published Greek Lyric Poetry: A New Translation, for which he received the Umhoefer Prize for Achievement in the Humanities. He is also the author of a book of literary essays, A Poetry of Two Minds, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism.

He has received fellowships from the Ingram Merrill and Guggenheim foundations, and the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1999 he received an Award for Literary Excellence from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
