Yo-Yo Ma, considered the greatest living cellist, will help Lehigh University celebrate the arts at Zoellner Arts Center’s premier fundraiser, GALA2010, on Saturday, October 23, 2010. His unrivaled musical virtuosity and personal charisma have earned him 16 Grammy Awards and scores of other honors and awards. He will be accompanied by the imaginative and versatile pianist Kathryn Stott.

Ma has released 75 records, holds Grammy Awards, honorary degrees and other awards, serves on President Obama’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, and has won the National Medal of the Arts and the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award. He was appointed Culture Connect Ambassador by the Department of State in 2002. He performed at President Obama’s Inauguration. His most recent two Grammy Awards are for his release, Songs of Joy and Peace.

Strongly committed to educational programs that bring young audiences into contact with music and allow them to participate in its creation, he develops new concert programs for families (helping, for instance, to inaugurate the family series at Carnegie Hall), and has appeared on Arthur, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and Sesame Street. He has recorded with Emanuel Ax and Itzhak Perlman, both of whom have also appeared at Zoellner.

Funds raised at Gala2010 support the arts at Lehigh by bridging the gap between ticket revenues and the costs of presenting outstanding artists, community outreach and educational programs.

Tickets are on sale now for the Gala Evening, which includes a cocktail reception, elegant dinner, preferred concert seating and a post-performance dessert reception, at $500 and $750. For Gala Evening details, contact Maureen Connolley at 610-758-6172 or email Gala2010@lehigh.edu.

Tickets for the 8 pm concert-only go on sale Wednesday, August 11 at noon through Ticket Services. Prices are $200, $150, $100 and $60 for students with Lehigh University ID. The cost of concert-only tickets above $100 is tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.

Subscribers (who purchase tickets to a minimum of at least five different events) may order concert-only tickets before they go on sale to the general public.
